Grand Slam

A few days ago a skeptical acquaintance said to me, “Well, here we are almost at the end of 2012 — the year that was supposed to be so dire!” I think she meant that, despite the prophecies she’d read about on the internet, everything was just fine. I thought, Are you kidding me?

On just about every count, 2012 has so far expressed, with cinematic color and clout, exactly the sort of cataclysms that the Uranus-Pluto square 1 had led astrologers to expect.

Everywhere in the world, economic instability, political disruption and record-breaking fires, droughts and storms have been up-ending the complacency of the inhabitants of Earth. This is Uranus at work.

Everywhere in the world, the pollution of the natural environment and the corrupt social agencies that seek to cover it up are being exposed, destabilizing the status quo and leaving no path open but that of deep-structure change. This is Pluto at work.

Global Storming

The USA, whose entry into the Cardinal Grand Slam2 is building by the month, is in the home stretch of a presidential campaign whose every aspect emits the rancid falseness of a civilization (Capricorn) in an advanced state of decay (Pluto). Characterized by a newly brazen use of outright lies, the messages hammered home by the various Capricorn figures at the podium have all been declaiming for the furtherance of an economic system based on bubbles — whose last calamitous bursting (Uranus) in 2008 seems not to have fazed in the least a segment of the Republican-voting underclass: the very voters whom it has harmed the most.

Politically and meteorologically, the summer of 2012 has expressed the Cardinal Cross to a tee. The Republican convention, which took place during a drought more extensive than any on record, occasioned a fitting bit of guerilla theater in late August under a Moon waxing to fullness in Pisces (melting, dissolution). Conventioneers in Tampa were greeted by giant blocks of melting ice that Occupy protesters had arranged to spell out the words “middle class”.

Though many Americans saw the unprecedented temperatures as a message from the gods about global warming, Congress did not get that memo. They went ahead and green lighted Big Oil to drill in Alaska. I used to think that no environmental calamity could possibly compete in awfulness with letting oil companies despoil the last remaining American wilderness. That was before I’d heard of fracking.

In August we saw jobless laborers and impoverished farmers in New York join a growing list of fracking-friendly states in a bid to sacrifice their environmental health in the name of “job creation”.  About the kindest thing you can say about this logic, which would pit supposed economic necessity against a clean and functioning ecosystem, is that it represents short-term thinking in extremis. What is the cost of wages earned by poisoning the groundwater, sickening the population and turning the landscape into a dystopian dead zone?

The fracking already going on in California is supposedly a kinder, gentler sort. Its lobbyists present it as innocuous because it uses less water.

Death vs. Life Wish

But the public is starting to rouse itself. Protests against this hellish practice are popping up all over the country.

Fracking and other environmental desecrations represent a kind of death wish in the American psyche (Pluto). The function of the Grand Slam is to push to an extreme certain strains of collective darkness, in order to slap us awake (Uranus). These are the consciousness wars of the Cardinal Cross years. Some of them are taking place on the battlefield of industry vs. the environment. Some are taking place on the battlefield of the many vs. the few.

On a personal level, the combatants consist of our egoic mind vs. our spiritual perspective.

Notes

1 The transit’s first exactitude was at the summer Solstice, its second over the Autumnal Equinox, and its third will be May 20th, 2013. My new book discusses the square in detail.

2 The transiting Uranus-Pluto square, when configured with the Sibly chart’s natal Sun-Saturn square, becomes a Grand Cross in Cardinal signs which will peak in 2014-15.

...yes, while i agree things are grim, i wonder if they look grimmer with the overlay of persistent self pre-occupation. doesn't any disupted or disenfranchised generation think that what they've lived through what has to be the worst of the worst? we may indeed blow ourselves up or pollute ourselves into oblivion...and, well so what? civilizations have come and gone before...it's a bit disconcerting for sure. it was disconcerting the first time an idigenous elder said it to me: i was flabbergasted!! but it also made me peek underneath my own ego-ic need to see the outrage covering up the helplessness which also covered up a deeper acceptance of all things coming and going. if we take the longer view, there is a transcendent peace. not escapism, but a wise acceptance...we do what we can. but to strip my gears over it is not making the best use of the possibilities afoot. whether we descecrate this place or not.

Thank you for your keen insight and clear astrological perspective. These days are mad to the extreme. With the mobsters of commerce holding the reins of power, our "civilization" is careening out of control. Social course correction is coming, albeit softly and gradually, from the ordinary human heart post cardinal square years. Patience and resolve are key. I am using this time to pray and practice conscious living...holding my energy in love and faith and participating in sharing truth with those who are ready to hear it.

Dear Jessica, You have concisely summarized the current astro-geo-political-social picture so well. I also resonate totally with Brenda's comment. Thank You For Your Carefully thought out insight and abiity to say it like it is. Hillary Adrian

“We can always count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have exhausted all the other possibilities.” Winston Churchill. This is as true today as it was when Winston Churchill said it.

DISCERNMENT is the key. The Tao teaches this. Practice it under a skilled teacher. Then, all the externals fall into place and we can move from an internal source of equipoise.

Hi, Jessica - I always look forward to your posts. Hydrofracking has been of great concern to those of us who live on the Marcellus Shale for quite some time. The Onondaga Nation and Neighbors of the Onondaga Nation sponsored a wonderful event this weekend ( http://www.syracuse.com/news/index.ssf/2012/09/water_is_life_music_festival_d.html ) to gather more momentum for the Frack No!! movement. (Please ignore the horrible comments at the end of the article -- a lot of major chowderheads live in this part of the country). The consciousness and energy of the Indigenous People of this Continent inspire those of us who are waking up to our relationship with Mother Earth to join them in stopping her continued rape for profit. She will prevail and we will support her in bringing an end to this horrible practice. Our Governor is a shill for the oil & gas industry and the anti-fracking movement has a working plan in place to follow him whereever he goes in New York State to remind him that he is going against the cosmic flow. We did have a moratorium on fracking for over a year, so the struggle continues. My family moved into a home directly on the Marcellus shale the year before last and the former owners signed a lease with Chesapeake Energy which remained in effect despite the property changing ownership -- this is how insidious the gas and oil industry is. There was no way to rescind the lease. Fortunately, it expired 3 months after we moved in and there was no fracking activity because of the moratorium which was soon to expire. The Frackers are Archons which entice vulnerable, desperate people with a Mephistophelian Bargain. This evil practice HAS to go. FRACK, NOOOOOO!!!!! Get these Frackers off our planet!!

It would appear, at this early stage of the repeating Uranus/ Pluto squares that humanity is going to be really hard to awaken to the reality of the collapse of damaging and life destroying structures that have provided an illusory security for many on this earth. We obviously need seven hits to jolt us out of our sleep with heads in the sand. It is sad that nothing less will suffice.

Jessica, Thanks for the clarity. I find myself experiencing the "you're kidding, right?" sentiment frequently when talking with people who seem to believe the mind-numbing media reports about improved jobs reports and rising stock market values. The latest idiocy, that sales of the iPhone 5 may save our economy is the real kicker. Really?
